FAQs

Do you transcribe documents?

Yes. If you have a document that was written in English, but you are having trouble figuring out what it says, I can help! Older documents can be difficult to read, due to anything from poor penmanship or spelling to obscure phrasing. Wills, land records, church records, passenger lists and more can be fantastic sources of genealogical information, but only if you know what they say! I will look at a copy (.jpg, .pdf, etc) of the record in question and write a transcription of that record for you.

What if I’m interested in some other kind of research that’s not listed here?

I would love to try and help you! Please fill out the Request Form and provide me with as detailed an explanation as possible of what sort of research you would like me to do. I will do my best to accommodate your research requests.

When is payment due?

  • Once you have decided to retain my services, I will begin your research upon receipt of the Initial Fee of $150.00 (residents of Canada please add 13% HST).
  • For projects costing under $400.00, the remainder of the payment will be due once I have completed the research.
  • For projects costing over $400.00 (which is the equivalent of about 10 hours of research), payment is requested at each milestone mutually agreed upon between the client and myself
  • If other payment options work better for you, we can certainly customize a payment plan to meet your needs.

How do you accept payment?

I accept payment by PayPal, or cheque, money order, or bank draft by mail. I can accept Canadian or US funds (at par). Please contact me for more details.

How long does the research take?

The length of time it takes to complete the research is unique to each project. Among the factors that determine how long a research project takes to complete are:

  • how much information the client already knows about his or her ancestors
  • what particular information the client wants to find out, and in what detail
  • the availability of records

To give you some idea about research time, projects in which I was requested to trace one side of a family back 4 generations required roughly 5 – 8 hours to research. This, of course, varies with each individual project.

In order for me to estimate how long your project will take, please contact me using the form on the Contact Me page and I will respond as soon as possible.
